Principal scientist - TRISTAN BURGESS BVSc, PhD

Dr. Burgess is a wildlife veterinarian and epidemiologist. He consults on wildlife health management for state and federal agencies and some of the nation’s finest zoos and aquaria. He has handled and worked with a wide range of captive and free-ranging wildlife from lions and Tasmanian devils to penguins and sea otters. Tristan teaches courses in wildlife health management for zookeepers, wildlife biologists, and veterinarians; field and lab methods for wildlife disease biologists; epidemiological data analysis; and outbreak investigation.

Research interests:
  • Effects of disease on ecosystem processes, 
  • How can health and disease impact on, or be used to measure, conservation outcomes?
  • Intersection of behavioral/foraging ecology and animal health.
